Kakabeka Falls Field Trip Write up (DRAFT)
Just to note, the sky was sky blue for most of the day. Very nice weather.
The tour started about 10:30a with Mark providing an overview of the geology of the area using a number of presentation boards throughout the tour.
We then toured Kakabeka Falls viewed from both sides and above along the bridge.
Stopped at Hwy11/17 and Hwy 590 (Boreal Road) to view stromatalies in roadside embankment. Also pyrites and ?anthracite? coal.
Proceeded up Hwy 11/17 turned west onto Briggs Drive and visited a glacial till (esker?) site which showed the immense power and water activity that occurred as the glacial melt (10k years ago) carried larger boulders of conglomerate materials down through a delta spreading into the superior rift (Lake Superior area).
Next we travelled along Hwy 11/17 to Hwy 102 and then back to Mud Lake Rd where several good examples of pillowed lava can be found in the Hwy 102 rock cut there.
