General Meeting: Talk: Elinor Barr on the History of Silver Islet

Wed, Jun 13, 2018: General Meeting: Speaker: Elinor Barr: Talk on the History of Silver Islet and movie.

Elinor Barr is the author of "Silver Islet: Striking It Rich in Lake Superior" and several other books related to the history and culture of Northwestern Ontario. Her books are available locally, at the library and at Amazon.ca

Elinor introduced the film "Rise and Fall of Silver Islet" by Peter Elliott  who also produced "The Castle of White Otter". Both movies have been shown on CBC. Here is a 1925 film of silver mining in Cobalt, ON which gives an idea of the conditions and processes of that period.

Elinor answered questions about the history of Silver Islet past, present and touched on future conservation efforts. She spoke about her interests and start in history writing on the topic of Ignace, her home town.

The club plans to make arrangements to have Elinor back in the fall and promote the event with the library and other partners.
